Fear to the Rescue

We’ve all heard the saying that fear stands for: Forget Everything And Run. You may have also heard that fear stands for: Face Everything And Rise.

As humans it is only natural to have fear regarding a new activity or a new risk when you don’t know for sure the outcome. But then again, there would be no risk if you new the outcome.

Seventeen years ago as a 21 year old mechanic in the US Army, I decided to give my best effort to joining the United States Special Forces (Green Berets). If you know anything about the army, a mechanic really doesn’t have a lot of business trying out to be a Green Beret. To say that I had fear was an understatement.

However, I decided to use that fear to my advantage. Fear made me more alert and attentive to what was going on. Some of the other soldiers that were trying out with me were infantry soldiers and soldiers with combat experience. I had neither. That experience actually gave them too much confidence and many of them ended up failing out.

Me being the unexperienced mechanic, I asked every question that I though necessary. I paid extra attention during the land navigation modules and I gave more than I though I had during the team building events. The fear of failure pushed me to stay up late, walk the literal extra mile, and sacrifice as much as I could to be successful and join the ranks of the elite Special Forces.

Never let fear stop you. Acknowledge that fear is present and flip that into positive energy to push you to SUCCESS!
